Better Buildings, Together.

looking ahead

Never before have we seen this level of demand for progress toward net zero buildings, carbon accounting, and third-party review of results. The demand for net zero commercial real estate is shaping decisions from design through short- and longer-term ownership. There is a significant opportunity for incremental, yet impactful improvement, and stakeholders are demanding transparency.

Cities worldwide are also developing and implementing tangible decarbonization policies at a rapid pace to achieve impending global climate goals. As this Lookback goes to print, the White House and U.S. DOE recently announced a national definition for a Zero Emissions Building to standardize the pursuit of decarbonization goals, an effort supported by GBI to ensure we are all working towards the same outcomes.

In the 20 months preceding this announcement, GBI recognized a market need for an assessment program that helps building owners measure their progress towards net zero energy and carbon and seek customized guidance for improvement. The unique journey approach allows all buildings to participate by identifying current progress and critical strategies, regardless if a building owner is just getting started or has made substantial strides towards decarbonization.

We stand at a pivotal moment – make changes or face consequences. GBI is taking action, by leveraging our extensive global community of subject matter experts and commercial real estate professionals to develop rigorous yet accessible tools and resources and pulling back the curtain and sharing replicable strategies from industry leaders.

2023 was a year of incredible growth for GBI, and we continue to work diligently to support our mission, to improve the built environment’s impact on climate and society and deliver #betterbuildingstogether.
