The Green Building Initiative (GBI) is an international organization with a vision that supports making sustainable, healthy, and resilient buildings available to all. GBI accelerates the accessibility of sustainability assessment and certification through delivery of science- and consensus-based standards that are applicable to all types of commercial real estate at every lifecycle stage. Who we are.
Mission: To improve the built environment’s impact on climate
and society.
Vision: Sustainable, healthy, and resilient buildings for all.
Why we're here.
It is imperative that we continue to evaluate our current building stock and future design and construction to increase efficiency, improve occupant wellness, and mitigate risk. GBI makes aspirational goals achievable through user-friendly tools built upon comprehensive standards and supported by outstanding staff and expert assessors. As a nonprofit community, we are educators and coaches first, supporting performance improvement of all buildings.
By 2060, we are set to experience the largest wave in building and infrastructure growth in human history. It is predicted that 2.6 trillion SF of space is going to be added to the world’s building stock, which equates to building a New York City every month for the next 40 years. That is in addition to the 80% of the building stock that exists today that will still be standing by 2060.
