Looking back on 2023, I’m incredibly grateful for the generosity of GBI’s elected leaders, staff members, and community members.

Dr. Amlan Mukherjee, Chair of the GBI Board in 2023, was appointed to the prestigious GSA Acquisition Policy Federal Advisory Committee (GAP FAC). We are incredibly grateful to Dr. Mukherjee for lending his extensive expertise in life cycle assessment to this effort aimed at lowering the federal government’s carbon footprint through procurement policies.

Also, Jenna Morgan Hamilton, long-time VP of National Affairs for GBI, was elected to a two-year role as Chair of the High Performance Building Coalition, with members including AIA, ASHRAE, IAPMO, ICC, IFMA, NEMA, and UL. This coalition leads policy discussions with members of Congress and their staff members that advance our industry’s effectiveness through coordinated messaging on priority issues.

Lastly, on behalf of our members and public stakeholders, the GBI Board and staff completed an extensive investment period between 2021 and 2023 resulting in doubling GBI’s staff, increasing the organization’s total assets to more than $12 million, and adding numerous programs while increasing access to green building solutions, like Green Globes, over a much larger territory in the U.S., Canada, and beyond as our incremental global expansion continues.

As our 2024 Chair Tim Thiel has stated, we are inspired by the volunteers in our midst and incredibly appreciative of our highly talented staff and leadership. We look forward to adding even more value in 2024 and all the years to come.

Letter from the Chair of the Board

As Chair of the GBI Board of Directors and a Board member for the past six plus years, I’ve been delighted to see GBI’s progress. As we look back at 2023, I see some key achievements on GBI’s journey toward its vision of sustainable, healthy, and resilient buildings for all.

• GBI launched its first annual Hill Day with its Executive Committee lending their time and expertise to policy discussions impacting the built environment at the national level. 

• Green Globes for Existing Buildings 2023 completed a 29-month technical review process and received approval through the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) making it GBI’s second official American National Standard.

• GBI launched the Green Globes Journey to Net Zero after more than 18-months of technical development and received an overwhelming response to its pilot announcement with 170 buildings from a variety of verticals joining.

My predecessor, Dr. Amlan Mukherjee, P.E., led GBI through its 19th year leaning heavily into developing partnerships and alliances that have advanced GBI’s ability to grow green building activity and third-party assessment happening across multiple countries. GBI was pleased to:

• Attend ASHRAE’s Winter Conference. 

• Sponsor BOMA International’s first Decarbonization Conference.

• Host a reception at Greenbuild. 

• Support the National Institute of Building Science’s (NIBS) Consultative Council, Housing Affordability Hearing, and Women
  Executives in Building efforts.

• Advance certification opportunities in three new countries in addition to the U.S. and Canada.

More than anything, I want to thank the GBI community for their support. From the dozens of subject matter experts that volunteer to support our standards to the Green Globes Assessors and Green Globes Professionals renowned for their dedication to high quality service, we thank you. 

I am proud to Chair GBI’s Board as the organization celebrates its 20th year of operation. As we look back not only at 2023 but to how far we’ve come as an organization, I want to thank all of those that came before me in this role, those that have served GBI in leadership, and our incredible, dedicated staff members. Thank you for all you continue to do to keep GBI the innovative, mission-driven organization it is today.
